're watching cnn's special coverage of president barack obama's inaugural weekend. the crowd is out here. it's getting cooler. today it was warm. it was in the 50s. but it's getting cool at night. but that's not stopping the crowd from turning out. and we didn't think they would come out, because we thought it would be cold and they wouldn't be as enthused. but boy, they are. we're going to get to all of that in just a moment here on the national mall. but first, we want to get you up to speed on the news that's making headlines today here on cnn. and to breaking news, as a matter of fact. and the latest on the unfolding crisis in algeria. the hostage situation at a desert gas field appears to be over now. we're hearing reports from the algerian government that at least 23 foreign hostages and dozens of their captors have been killed. it's still not clear how many americans may have been held at the facility. >> with regard to the numbers of americans, we are still trying to get accurate information about just exactly how many americans were located there, and exactly what happened to them.

the nation's capital this weekend. cnn you can be sure is covering it all. parades, concerts, and religious services all of it leading up to the big main event, president obama's inauguration ceremony coming up on monday highlights of that event, the swearing in, of course, and the inaugural speech. white house correspondent brianna keilar joins me to talk more about this. first of all, let's talk about the speech. i understand that the president's still working on it. so what are the themes? what's the focus? >> he is still working on it. he'll be doing tweaks till the last minute. right now he's doing some major tweaks and he's been writing this during the day in the oval office but also at night after sasha and malia go to bed as well as his wife goes to bed. he has time alone in the residence to work on it. some of the major themes and we just learned this from dan lothian who covers the white house. this is sort of the fact that the president is confronting the reality of a divided washington that he'll be acknowledging that there are some divisions but he'll talk about how there's res

out the fist one. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is here in washington with me this morning. good morning to you. so thumbs or thumbs down. how do they think he's doing? >> we have some polls, a lot of polls. a lot of polls have skasked, ise doing a good job? do you approve or not approve? our cnn poll of polls say 53% say, yes, they approve of the job the president is doing in office, 42% disapprove. but what about the specific issues, not overall. take a look at this from orc, look at the numbers on the left, randi. these are where he's doing very well on the issues, terrorism, environment, foreign affairs, immigration, but those are not so important to americans. the economy, he's at 48%. what's the second most important? the deficit, we know that's been in the news lately, 41%. so it depends on the issue. >> and gun policy is in there as well. that snuck in there. has the president lived up to expectations, do you think, according to our polls? >> we asked just that and you can see from these results, about one in ten, 13% said he has exceeded expectations over the last

're looking at the companies and profitability of companies. look, a cnn "time"/orc poll found 50% favor stronger gun laws. what's your read? will the words obama and gun legislation be written in the same words of the history book? >> that is certainly the intention of the obama administration. you know, it was certainly their intention the first four years of their administration, as well. but going into the next four years, what has really changed in the last several weeks is the public sentiment has swung so far in their favor in the wake of the newtown shootings. so they realize that they've got a tough fight ahead of themselves. facing a republican-led house of representatives. certainly we've got motivated people on the other side of the argument who are trying to defend what they perceive to be their second amendment rights to bear arms. but with public sentiment having swung the pendulum in the favor of the obama administration's platform and tightened gun control legislation and the specific clauses banning assault rifles and high capacity magazines, i think they're more than m

interesting point. there's a column written someplace, cnn.com, i'm not sure, by my friend john avlon. and he's a moderate to sort of slightly left of center guy. but he says this. he says the gop at the state level has really more diversification than the democrats do. and he cites, for example, hispanic governors, brian sandoval in nevada, suzanne martinez of new mexico. indian american governor bobby jindal, who may run for president. okay? he also talks about in the senate a new star, ted cruz, hispanic from texas. and of course marco rubio, hispanic from florida. we have african-american senator tim scott, just appointed. 24s pretty good stuff. >> it is. >> the question is if you did so well on the diversity issues at the state level for these gubernatorial and senate races why can't you get it done at the presidential level? >> well, the presidential level is a little different thing that i'm in charge of at the house level, but we had 21 women candidates and incumbents, all of whom the democrats targeted and replaced with men. you know, we have done a pretty good job, but not as good a

as this operation in different ways proceeds. in other words, they had, we understand today, cnn was told that there was an operation that was carried out to move in and try to press even further in, get more of the terrorists, and possibly move of the hostages and that they are hunkered down, as mike rogers of the house intelligence committee put it. so it's not over. >> how much frustration is there or are you hearing or sensing there is from u.s. officials about the way the algerian government has handled the situation, particularly not informing the u.s. or other governments about this operation before it began. >> exactly. they did not get any notice. the british said it, the united states said it. there was frustration also in the lack of information, the lack of clarity, conflicting information that was given. but the other part of it is, you know, algeria has been useful in the war against terror, and they have, of course, given overflight to france to go into mali. so they are useful, but the techniques they use would not be the techniques certainly that some western governments
